Abstract

Background

This study was undertaken to assess the efficacy and safety of oral sildenafil citrate (Viagra) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with low sexual ability.

Methods

A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all patients with ED treated with sildenafil citrate (Viagra) between March 2009 and April 2014. Patients were defined as patients with any indication for ED treatment with sildenafil citrate. ED was defined as a first episode of ED that resolved within 12 weeks and lasted for at least 6 months.

Results

Of the patients, 19 patients (50%) were treated with sildenafil citrate (Viagra) and 8 patients (21%) were treated with a placebo. Of the patients, 17 patients (50%) had no adverse effects. A total of 1.3% patients experienced mild to moderate (5-10 mm Hg) ED, and 8 patients (21%) reported ED that was within the defined tolerability range.

Conclusion

This retrospective cohort study showed that sildenafil citrate is as effective as a placebo for the treatment of ED in patients with low sexual ability.
